If you’ve read the “Weight Loss Journey” tab of my blog, you know that I recommend rewarding yourself with non-food rewards for achieving milestone goals along your weight loss journey. I’ve found that this tactic is extremely effective.
Right after I had Moochi, I bought a really nice bottle of lotion from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, it was almost $50.00. I told myself I couldn’t use it until I was down 50 lbs and called it my $50/50lb lotion. When I ran out of my other lotion before I reached 50 lbs of weight loss, I had to buy a different new bottle of lotion. Now that I’ve reached and passed 50 lbs, I think about how far I’ve come and my goals for the day in the morning when I apply that $50.00 lotion. Fifty dollars is a lot for lotion, but most significantly overweight people I know would pay much much more than $50.00 to lose 50 lbs. I have a list of reward for different weight loss goals.
My rule: I do not let myself indulge in those rewards until I achieve those goals.
Ideas for Weight Loss Milestone Achievement Rewards
1.) New Body Lotion. I am obsessed with this lotion. I originally started using this lotion in law school. A friend of mine worked for the parent company of Kiehl’s and got an allowance from the company store for products every month. He kindly sent me a giant bottle of this lotion and I fell in love. I was SO mad when I found out how much it costs, but continued to buy it (on a law student budget!) because it’s that amazing. Nordstrom typically sells a giant 1L bottle of this lotion in the Anniversary Sale (the NAS takes place in July). That giant bottle was the bottle that I wouldn’t let myself open until I lost 50 lbs. I ended up using a drugstore brand until I reached my goal. It was worth it! This lotion leaves skin soft and dewy. It absorbs well and has doesn’t have a scent, which is nice because it does not compete with perfume.
2.) An experience. Is there something you’ve been wanting to try? Skydiving? A new golf course? A new haircut place? A massage? Tell yourself that you get to try that experience, but only when you achieve a specific weight loss milestone. If you are really looking to splurge, maybe your reward could be a trip to a City or country that you’ve been wanting to visit! Bonus points if your previous weight was holding you back from attempting this experience. I am currently holding off on getting a manicure and pedicure until I achieve 70 lbs of weight loss. Everytime I look down at my nails, I look forward to seeing them polished. I think the pedicure will be a nice reward for my feet – they’ve been working hard during all my runs lately!
3.) New Workout Clothes. This one is a classic weight loss reward. I normally do not advocate buying clothing that is too small. A #goals reward workout outfit is an exception – but only go one size down (i.e. If you’re a XL, buy a L). For women, I am pretty obsessed with Nordstrom’s in house brand: Zella. I am obsessed with this running jacket and considering adding it to my personal weight loss reward list.
4.) A high end accessory. For women, this could be a new bag, sunglasses or a high end pair of shoes. For men, maybe a new wallet or a belt. The key is to pick something that will last and something that you’ll use often. I think it’s helpful to have a frequent reminder of the hard work you put in to acheive your goals. Imagine if every time you pulled out your wallet to pay for a meal at a restaurant, you thought about your weight loss and all the sweat, dieting and tracking it took to get you to your goal weight…. I’d think twice before ordering the unhealthiest thing on the menu… how about you? I do not want to spoil the surprise, so I won’t share the specifics, but I am purchasing myself a special purse when I reach my goal weight! I can’t wait to carry it and show it off!
