I weigh myself every week to check my progress on my diet. I used to weigh myself everyday. I found that this often discouraged me… little fluctuations that didn’t seem to have any relation to what I ate or how I exercised were driving me nuts and making me feel that losing weight was hopeless. The daily number on my scale was dictating my mood for the day and I wasn’t seeing results because I was too focused on the daily number and not on long term results.
Most people’s weight varies throughout the day – that’s why I weigh myself at the same time every week on Wednesday (first thing in the morning). By only weighing myself once a week I am giving my body time to show actual weight loss (or gain) and not just little fluctuations in my body weight due to water retention, a big meal or dehydration. I’ve found this is a great way to monitor my progress and helps me see the general downward trend without getting discouraged.
I chose Wednesdays because I am home almost every Wednesday. I previously weighed in on Saturdays, but found that I was often out of town for the weekend and couldn’t consistently stick with Saturday morning weigh-ins.
Even when I am not dieting, I still weigh myself every Wednesday. As someone who has struggled with my weight, its important to check the actual number every week and make sure I am not beginning to creep back into my old ways.
