People love to give Planet Fitness a hard time for not being a “real” gym. Planet Fitness markets itself as the “Judgement Free Zone” and claims to be “anti-lunk,” and maybe this leads to people’s attitudes about it.
In the past 7 years, I’ve been a member of 5 gyms, including Planet Fitness. Here’s what I will say about all 5 locations I’ve visited since I’ve been a member – they are all REALLY clean and they all have newer equipment. If you are new(ish) to working out and not a bodybuilder type or someone trying to build up serious muscle, Planet Fitness might be for you. If you travel frequently and want to pay one low monthly fee for a gym with many many locations, Planet Fitness also might be for you. If you are motivated by looking around the gym at other seriously fit people and enjoy working out with others who know what they are doing and push you to be your best…. Planet Fitness may not be for you.
CLEAN… Like REALLY Clean
Newish equipment in every location I’ve visited
There is a location in almost every town and City that I’ve been & you can visit any location for one low fee
I never feel silly for trying out a new machine or trying a new exercise… half the people there have a bewildered look on their face. There are also some extremely fit people who work out at PF and motivate me to push myself.
There are other people who are at various places in their fitness journey. I’m actively working out with people who are also trying to get fit and be a better version of themselves, I feel like I am part of a team.
Includes free group personal training… this is great if you want to work with a trainer to put together a leg/arm/core/back or whatever kind of routine that you can repeat on your own
They hand our free Pizza the first Monday night of the month – this makes me scratch my head, it’s just gimmicky and silly. Why don’t they hand out protein shakes or fresh fruit or literally anything else?
Sometimes a really unfit person will try to be “friendly” and talk to you about how to lose weight or do an exercise correctly…. its annoying. I’ll stick to my own research and working with a professional for workout and diet advice, thanks
The purple and yellow color scheme is almost blinding
If you decide you are seriously into body building or want extra heavy equipment, you will probably have to move on to a more serious gym
Overall it’s been a win for me. At $20 a month with unlimited access to any club in the country, I’ve been able to fit more gym trips into my schedule despite frequent travel. I personally find that working out with others who are not quite “fit” yet is motivating. I feel like we are all on a team together and working to make ourselves better. Planet Fitness is currently a great fit for me and I will be continuing my membership for the foreseeable future.
